# Adding Floor Plan Units

Once you've [created a {{variable.floorplan}}](/v3/docs/creating-floor-plans){target="_blank"} and [added furniture](/docs/adding-furniture-to-floor-plans){target=`_blank`}, you can add {{variable.floorplanitems}} to represent the different areas and furniture within your space. 

*For example, you can place furniture on your {{variable.floorplan}} to represent your hot desks, then link each piece of furniture to its own hot desk {{variable.item}}. Or you can link an area of the {{variable.floorplan}}, such as an office or meeting room, to a {{variable.item}} representing that part of your space.*

:::(Info) (It's important to link each {{variable.floorplanunit}} to specific furniture or areas on your {{variable.floorplan}}, not just the plan itself.)
For this reason, we recommend creating {{variable.floorplanunits}} **directly from the Floor Plan itself** rather than the Inventory screen.

You can link {{variable.floorplanitems}} such as **desks** and **phone booths** to [furniture](/v3/docs/adding-furniture-to-floor-plans){target="_blank"} representing these {{variable.items}}. 

You can link rooms and other enclosed spaces such as **offices** and **meeting rooms** to discrete areas in your {{variable.floorplan}}. 

:::(Warning) (Areas such as rooms must be *fully surrounded by walls and/or partitions* to be counted as a discrete area in the {{variable.floorplan}}.)

The type of {{variable.floorplanitem}} you add depends on the area or furniture in your space it represents.

## Adding {{variable.FloorPlanItems_CAPS}} to Furniture
Add {{variable.floorplanitems}} to furniture when the {{variable.item}} represents bookable or contractable items such as desks and booths.

1. {{variable.OPEN}} the relevant {{variable.floorplan}} from {{variable.FloorPlans_Link}} if you haven't already. 
2. {{variable.CLICK_ON}} the **Manage** tab. 
3. On the {{variable.floorplan}}, click on the furniture  want to add to your {{variable.floorplanitem}} inventory.
4. Under **Desk / Office details**, click create a new {{variable.item}}.
5. Name your {{variable.item}}. 
6. {{variable.SELECT}} the {{variable.item}} type. 
7. Under **Status**, toggle on *In service: this {{variable.item}} can be assigned to contracts or bookings.*
8. {{variable.CLICK}} the **Save changes** button. 

Repeat these steps for any other {{variable.floorplanitems}} you'd like to add to your inventory. You can access your {{variable.floorplanitems}} from the {{variable.floorplan}} editor or the Inventory section of the {{variable.AdminPanel}}. 

## Adding {{variable.FloorPlanItems_CAPS}} to Areas 
Add {{variable.floorplanitems}} to areas in your space when they represent bookable or contractable rooms such as offices and meeting rooms.

1. {{variable.OPEN}} the relevant {{variable.floorplan}} from {{variable.FloorPlans_Link}} if you haven't already. 
2. {{variable.CLICK_ON}} the **Manage** tab. 
3. On the {{variable.floorplan}}, click on the area you want to add to your {{variable.floorplanitem}} inventory.

:::(Warning) (Make sure to link offices and meeting rooms to the area, <u>not</u> furniture within that area.)
Linking {{variable.floorplanitems}} representing rooms to furniture can easily result in double-booking or assigning the same space to multiple contracts.

4. Under **Desk / Office details**, click create a new {{variable.item}}.
5. Name your {{variable.item}}. 
6. {{variable.SELECT}} the {{variable.item}} type. 
7. Under **Status**, toggle on *In service: this {{variable.item}} can be assigned to contracts or bookings.*
8. {{variable.CLICK}} the **Save changes** button. 

Repeat these steps for any other {{variable.floorplanitems}} you'd like to add to your inventory. You can access your {{variable.floorplanitems}} from the {{variable.floorplan}} editor or the Inventory section of the {{variable.AdminPanel}}.
