# Messages on Members Portal 5

## What are messages?
**Messages** let {{variable.customers}} communicate with each other directly on the {{variable.MembersPortal}} and {{variable.Passport}}.

## How messages work  
{{variable.Customers_CAP}} can send messages to any other {{variable.customer}} who has their profile [published in the directory](/v3/docs/publishing-professional-profiles){target=`_blank`}. They can [send messages](/v3/docs/sending-messages-on-members-portal-5){target=`_blank`} by navigating to their inbox from their dashboard or by searching for people in the [directory](/v3/docs/the-directory-on-members-portal-5){target=`_blank`}. 


## Enabling messages
Messages are available by default and can't be disabled. This feature is only available to logged-in {{variable.customers}} whether they're {{variable.members}} or {{variable.contacts}}.
